A Brief History of the Mallinckrodt Center: Rise and Fall of Student Spaces

Introduction to the Exhibit:

The Mallinckrodt Center's imposing materials of concrete and glass–designed by Smith and Entzeroth and Robert Vickery associated architects–stands in stark contrast to the Collegiate Gothic architecture which decorates the rest of the Washington University in St. Louis campus.

In the modern day, many WashU students think of Mallinckrodt as a place they visit to achieve a certain mission–whether that be to pickup up a book, to watch a show, to get a Subway sandwich, or to visit the Writing Center–and not a place to sit and relax or socialize.

This exhibition invites the viewer to look past the strucutural curiosity and into Mallinckrodt's history as a center for student life and explore how WashU students wrestled with the challenges this uniqe space presented. Specific emphasis will be given to the Gargoyle; a central institution in marking the rise and fall of Mallinckrodt's student spaces.
